Sydney Metro Trains Facility South (NSW)

Sydney Metro Trains Facility South (NSW)

The Sydney Metro Trains Facility South (SMTF South) at Marrickville forms a critical part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest expansion, providing essential stabling, cleaning and light-maintenance capacity for the new driverless metro fleet. The facility includes a maintenance workshop, train wash, administration and security buildings, a covered store, fire-pump and water-treatment infrastructure, and associated car parking. Built over three years, SMTF South delivers the infrastructure needed to support the operation of up to 19 metro trains.

The electrical scope played a key role in bringing the facility to life. Works included the installation of approximately 1.4 kilometres of overhead wiring and 1.6 kilometres of electrical cabling to power the stabling yard, maintenance buildings, and ancillary systems. These installations provided energy distribution, lighting, and control systems critical to the operation of the facility, as well as power to the train wash, fire-pump and water-treatment systems. Designed with reliability and efficiency in mind, the electrical systems were fully integrated with Sydney Metro’s broader operational network.

The completion of SMTF South marks the successful delivery of modern, future-ready electrical infrastructure that underpins the performance and sustainability of Sydney’s growing metro network. The facility’s electrical systems support continuous train operations and contribute to the overall efficiency, safety and long-term resilience of the transport system.
