The project is state-of-the-art teaching, learning and studio/laboratory facilities, which also includes a large installation gallery with an unprecedented technical capacity to present world-class digital art and design works. A key part of the project is to re-orient the COFA campus onto Oxford Street, one of Sydney’s most significant traffic arteries and a key cultural and commercial corridor. This aligns with the City of Sydney Creative Precincts 2030 Plan.
The redevelopment included demolition of numerous buildings on the site to construct a new 3-storey building along the Selwyn Street edge, comprising administration and student rooms; a landscaped gallery forecourt; an additional floor to an existing building, and Gallery alterations and additions. It also includes an extension to the car park and basement to the Selwyn Street boundary. The development retains the significant former Albion Street School and other significant built elements.
